“In this sense, ‘developing taste’ becomes a process of embracing innovation and staying one step ahead of the tribe. The ability to curate and shape experiences that resonate with the tribe, even before they realize it, not only develops taste but also becomes a contribution to the cult.”

This is brilliant, I had never thought of it this way. It makes sense of my own experience in becoming part of a tribe. I didn’t realize my tastes converged with it and precipitated my joining it, rather than the other way around. We don’t decide who to join based on the people but based on what their taste signals.

Fantastic to see this published and out in the open. Taste is tribal is such a fascinating re-frame, it feels like you've stumbled into a universal truth. Once it's seen, it can't be unseen.
